MaracaTUcson All Souls Procession Workshops
November 4-November 8 (Wed night orientation and Monday departure, weekend only option possible)
Participation in the All Souls Procession on Sunday evening, November 8th.

Reason:
Why not!? Besides this and loving the maracatu/northeastern music, we have an event in Tucson that is very special. It's call the All Souls Procession, and it's one of the largest grass roots, non-motorized processions in the country. It has grown from a small handful of artists processing down the sidewalk to a multi-participatory procession with over 100,000 people lining the route and watching the finale. The procession is an event that invites everyone from all walks of life to mourn those who have passed, in the way that best suites them. How this plays out in the procession are people who make non-motorized floats with messages about their loved ones, important issues, life celebrations, music, dance, large scale puppets, and more. Sol Axe and the former Batucaxe have participated in this procession for at least 10 years, and the maracatu rhythms are uniquely suited to the event. It is quite hard to express in words the uniqueness of the procession; it is truly best to say watch the media /read the website, and trust us when we say that participating is an experience like no other. Please visit www.allsoulsprocession.org
About the workshops:
The plan is to hold workshops in the days leading up to the Procession participation, and those attending all perform and experience it as a group. This would include both music and dance, and our group could plan to assemble similarly to the Maractu procession "court", further sharing the cultural expression of these rhythms.
Who is on board right now:
Scott Kettner, Jeff Duneman (Maracatu and more), pending confirmation Beto Guimaraes (dance), Jorge Continentino (Forro in the Dark).Dianna Ramierez for organizational help.
Goal:
Learn two Maracatu rhythms and dance to use in the All Souls Procession (processing) with a possible short performance on the finale stage in front of about 60,000 people. Introduce local neighborhoods, community members to the regions music and culture in the months leading up to the workshops. Hold a Forro Night at our rehearsal location ( or downtown location of our sister capoeira group, TBD) during one of the busiest weekends in Tucson.
The schedule would look something like this:
Wednesday: Arrival day - Evening Orientation
Thursday, Friday: Maracatu Rhythm Workshops late morning to early afternoon, Dance class late afternoon to early evening, as well as sectionals and semi-private instruction for specific instruments (shekere, gongue/agogo, percussion, forro, etc.) Possible capoeira classes by our sister group.
Saturday: Maracatu Rhythms and Dance classes, Forro Night
Sunday: Late morning, early afternoon rehearsals for the Procession. Procession line up begins around 6pm, and the finale around 8:30, depending on the speed of the procession.
This schedule can and will be adjust by interest and needs, but this is the general idea. Shortening it one day is also possible, and we are considering a weekend option.
Locations:
Rhythm Industry Performance Factory, Sol Axe's rehearsal space. This is a very spacious climate controlled warehouse with a 1200 ft sprung marley floor, as well as ample safe drum storage. We may use The Movement Culture for dance, smaller sectionals, and the Forro Night (smaller space, but very high foot traffic).
Lodging and Food:
The plan is to give a few lodging options to attendees. The first option would be to reserve a block of rooms at a discounted rate in the heart of downtown Tucson, close to the rehearsal space. This would need to be decided as soon as possible because the All Souls Procession is one of Tucson's busiest tourist times. The second option would be to block rooms at a local hostel. These accommodations are inexpensive, but also very, very basic. The third option would be to create a first come, first serve hosting opportunity with members of Sol Axe and the local community offering their homes (think guest room to couch surfing). Preferential consideration will be given to out of state visitors in need.
Food options being considered are a late morning snack, and lunch included, dinner on your own. Other food considerations will be explored as the schedule becomes defined.
Transportation:
For those staying in a hotel, we would arrange with their transportation. We would also make that arrange for those staying in the hostel area. For those staying with hosts, you would share transportation with them. Ride shares and pick up lists will be made in advance for those who choose to lodge on their own. The downtown area has a streetcar for those wanting to explore the are on their off time, and it is very walk friendly.
Instruments and Costuming
Sol Axe Members will likely be using bateria instruments available. We hope to have some additional alfias/maracatu instruments. We will also be reaching out to the University of Arizona and their World Music Gang, to see what resources are available. Alfias will be the first consideration, since it is difficult to travel with them. We will be asking in the survey what instrument you play so we have a count for what is needed.
T-shirts will be part of the package, with a logo designed with the All Souls Organizers. Additional costuming will be planned for and sourced locally, as well as communicating with any out of town guests on special costuming (for example: skirts for shekere players, costumes for the "court")
Cost:
The cost that we are exploring is $195-240, which would include access to all workshops, food option, t-shirt, and organization/coordination to make your visit as easy as possible (if coming from out of town). A portion of proceeds will go to Sol Axe's professional development fund as well as to their parent organization (which organizes the All Souls Procession), Many Mouths, One Stomach.
There will be costs to reflect lodging/transportation organization on your own, early deposit/payment, as well as the weekend only (Sat/Sun, including tshirt and Procession participation).
